BIM Portale: Online Summit
Yakov Samsonov, Senior Solution Consultant at BPS, took part in a virtual roundtable, which was organized by BIM Portale, a thematic portal hosted in Italy. The event was devoted to the prospects for the development of BIM technologies in that country.
The participants discussed the worldwide trends in the field of BIM technologies that are becoming more and more relevant considering implementation of information modeling at the national level in Britain and Italy, and shared some practical cases, too. “BIM is a tool, merging all the parts of the investment and construction process into a common data stream”, Yakov Samsonov emphasized in his talk. “With the help of BIM technologies we can analyze and operate the project in all phases of its implementation. Nowadays developers have a hard time gathering additional as-built documents about the built facility (“as-built”): the traditional approach doesn’t allow erection of a building in full accordance with the initial concept. Thanks to BIM technologies we can try a different approach: the information model is considered as the main data source and the prototype of the future building, while the completed facility is only an accurate copy of it (“as-designed”).
As an example Mr. Samsonov mentioned the business district “Country Park”, created and now operated by BPS with the help of BIM technologies. It is also possible to run a facility via mobile applications. Provided that all data are linked to 3D graphics, data processing turns out to be greatly simplified. It is not unusual that neither the tenant nor the owner of the building is aware of what is hidden behind the office walls. In reality, you can’t always be sure of exact consistency between the existing engineering services and their presentation within the detailed design. “With BIM such situations just can’t take place. Here is how it works: let’s point the tablet at the ceiling of the office. The mobile application “comprehends”, where it is located now. With just the tap of a finger we can see the engineering systems, hidden behind the ceiling construction. The code reading application provides us with detailed equipment data, such as price, model, purchase date, warranty period and replacement date. This allows the owner of the facility to possess relevant information about the current state of the building throughout its whole life cycle.”
